Age-Specific Care

Different Ages,
Different Needs

Children's dental needs change dramatically between ages 1 and 18. We've split our care approach by age so you can see exactly what's relevant for your child right now.

🪥
Milk Teeth Cavities (Early Childhood Caries)
The most common childhood disease in India — more common than asthma. Sweetened drinks, milk bottles at night, and irregular brushing cause rapid decay in soft milk teeth.
Very Common
😰
Dental Anxiety & First-Visit Fear
Fear of dentists formed in childhood often lasts a lifetime. How a child's first few visits go is everything — which is why we invest so much in making them calm and positive.
Our Speciality
🌙
Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Many children grind their teeth during sleep — linked to stress, allergies, or a developing bite. Often outgrown, but needs monitoring to prevent enamel wear and jaw discomfort.
Common in 2–8 yrs
👎
Thumb-Sucking & Tongue Thrusting
Beyond age 4, prolonged thumb-sucking can push the front teeth outward and alter jaw development — requiring early intervention or guidance to stop the habit gently.
Act before age 5
⚡
Dental Trauma — Falls & Playground Injuries
Chipped, knocked-out, or displaced teeth from falls are a frequent emergency in young children. What you do in the first 30 minutes can determine whether the tooth is saved.
Emergency — Act Fast
Care for
Ages 1–10
This is the most critical window for dental health. Habits formed now — brushing, diet, comfort at the dentist — shape a child's oral health for the rest of their life. We focus as much on building trust as on clinical treatment.
✓
First dental visit by age 1 — gentle, playful, no procedures unless needed
✓
Cavity prevention: fluoride varnish, pit and fissure sealants
✓
Milk teeth fillings and pulp treatment (milk tooth root canal)
✓
Space maintainers if a milk tooth is lost early
✓
Guidance for parents: diet, brushing technique, habit counselling
✓
Emergency treatment for trauma, knocked-out or chipped teeth
70%
of Indian school children have dental caries
61%
suffer cavities in one or more teeth
🦷
Crooked Teeth & Bite Problems (Malocclusion)
The early teen years — when all permanent teeth have emerged — are the optimal window for braces or aligners. Treating bite issues now is faster, easier, and less invasive than waiting.
Best window: 11–15 yrs
😬
Wisdom Teeth Monitoring
Wisdom teeth typically begin to show between 17 and 21. Early monitoring from age 16 helps us identify crowding or impaction problems before they become painful emergencies.
Monitor from 16+
🏏
Sports Injuries & Dental Trauma
Cricket, football, basketball, kabaddi — sports injuries to teeth peak in the teen years. Custom mouthguards and rapid emergency care are part of what we offer for active adolescents.

Cavities from Sugary Drinks & Snacking
Teen diets — energy drinks, packaged snacks, late-night eating — are some of the highest-risk habits for enamel erosion and cavities. We offer non-judgmental guidance and preventive care.

Smile Confidence & Appearance Concerns
Teens are often acutely aware of their smiles. Whether it's discolouration, spacing, or a chipped tooth affecting confidence, we address cosmetic concerns with an age-appropriate, honest approach.

Care for
Ages 11–18
Adolescence is when permanent teeth are all in, identity and confidence are forming, and the consequences of dental neglect become permanent. This is when we transition from prevention-first to comprehensive care — and start including the teen in their own treatment decisions.

Orthodontic assessment — braces, clear aligners, retainers
✓
Wisdom teeth monitoring and early intervention

A Commonly Ignored Truth

Why Milk Teeth
Cannot Be Ignored

"They'll fall out anyway" is the most expensive assumption parents make about their child's dental health. Only 61% of parents in India are fully aware of how important milk teeth actually are — and that gap has real consequences.

Milk teeth aren't just placeholders. They are the foundation that determines how your child eats, speaks, smiles, and how their permanent teeth eventually come in.

"Treating a milk tooth isn't about saving something temporary. It's about protecting everything permanent that comes after it."

— Dr. Divya Sharma · MDS Pedodontics · Dental White
5 Reasons Milk Teeth Matter
1
Space Holders for Permanent Teeth
Each milk tooth holds the exact space that the permanent tooth below needs to emerge straight. Lose it early and the neighbouring teeth drift — causing the permanent tooth to erupt crooked, often requiring braces later.
2
Chewing, Nutrition & Growth
A child with untreated cavities avoids chewing on the painful side, reducing food variety and nutrition — which can affect growth and development in measurable ways.
3
Speech & Language Development
Front milk teeth play a critical role in how children form sounds like "s", "f", "th", and "v". Early loss — especially before age 5 — can cause speech delays and lisps.
4
Infection Can Reach Permanent Teeth
The roots of milk teeth sit right above the developing permanent teeth. An untreated infection in a milk tooth can damage or discolour the permanent tooth forming beneath it.
5
Confidence, School & Peers
Studies show that children with poor oral health miss more school, are in more discomfort, and often feel self-conscious about their smile — affecting their confidence and social development.

Preventive Check-Ups
Six-monthly check-ups to catch problems before they become painful — and familiarise your child with the clinic at their own pace.
🛡️
Fissure Sealants & Fluoride Varnish
A thin protective coating applied to the back teeth's chewing surfaces — proven to significantly reduce cavities in children.
🦷
Tooth-Coloured Fillings
Gentle, white composite fillings for cavities in milk teeth — preserving the tooth and keeping your child comfortable and cavity-free.
❤️‍🩹
Pulp Therapy (Milk Tooth RCT)
When decay reaches the nerve of a milk tooth, pulp therapy saves it without extraction — preserving the space for the permanent tooth.
📏
Space Maintainers
If a milk tooth must be extracted, a space maintainer holds the gap open — preventing neighbouring teeth from drifting and protecting permanent eruption.

The Dental White Difference

We Don't Just Treat Teeth.
We Build Lifelong Trust.

Dental anxiety formed in childhood is one of the most common reasons adults avoid the dentist for years. Our entire approach to children's dentistry is built around preventing that outcome.

👋
Tell-Show-Do — Always

Before touching anything, we show your child every instrument, explain what it does in playful language, and only proceed when they feel ready. No surprises, no sudden actions, no rushing.

🐢
We Always Go at the Child's Pace

If a child needs the first visit to just sit in the chair and look around — that's a successful visit. We never force or restrain. Trust is built over visits, not manufactured in one appointment.

🗣️
Child-Friendly Language, Not Clinical Jargon

We don't say "injection" or "drill". We have our own child-friendly vocabulary for every instrument and procedure — words that describe without frightening.

👨‍👩‍👧
Parents Are Part of the Team

We explain everything to you clearly, answer every question, and give you practical tools to continue good oral care habits at home. You are never left out of your child's treatment discussion.

⭐
Positive Reinforcement, Always

Every child who cooperates — even a little — is celebrated. We end every visit on a positive note, so the next visit they're a little less nervous, not a little more.

Dental Emergencies in Children

Sports, Falls & Playground Accidents —
What to Do Right Now

Dental trauma is one of the most common childhood injuries. What you do in the first 30 minutes can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth permanently.

⚡
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
ACT IN 30 MINS
1
Pick it up by the crown — never touch the root. The root has delicate fibres that must stay intact.
2
Rinse gently with milk, saline, or clean water if it's dirty — do not scrub or use soap.
3
Try to re-insert it into the socket if your child is old enough and cooperative. Hold it in place with gentle biting on a cloth.
4
If not possible, store in milk or between the cheek and gum — never in water or dry in tissue.
5
Call us immediately and come in — survival time outside the mouth drops sharply after 30 minutes.
🥛
Knocked-Out Milk Tooth
DIFFERENT RULES
!
Do NOT try to replant a milk tooth — reinserting it can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath.
1
Control the bleeding with clean gauze or cloth — apply gentle pressure for 5–10 minutes.
2
Keep the tooth and bring it — we'll confirm it's the milk tooth and not a permanent one.
3
Call us for an emergency appointment — we'll assess whether a space maintainer is needed to protect the gap.
4
Calm your child first — dental trauma is frightening but rarely life-threatening. Stay calm and reassure them.
💔
Chipped or Fractured Tooth
SAME DAY
1
Save any large tooth fragments in milk — sometimes the piece can be re-bonded.
2
Rinse the mouth gently with warm water. Check for cuts to the lips or gums.
3
Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum temporarily to protect the tongue and cheeks.
4
See us the same day — a fracture that reaches the nerve needs prompt treatment to prevent infection.

Prevent It — Sports Mouthguards
PROACTIVE CARE

Custom mouthguards at Dental White are made from an impression of your child's teeth — far better-fitting and more protective than over-the-counter guards.

Recommended for cricket, football, basketball, hockey, cycling, gymnastics, martial arts, or any contact activity.

The recommended age for a first dental visit is within 6 months of the first tooth appearing — or by your child's first birthday, whichever comes first. At Dental White, this first visit is entirely gentle and non-clinical: we introduce your child to the chair, the lights, and Dr. Divya in a warm, playful way. No instruments unless absolutely necessary. The goal is a positive first impression — and we take that seriously.

Milk teeth hold the space for permanent teeth — lose them early and neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, causing permanent teeth to erupt crooked and often requiring braces later. Untreated cavities in milk teeth also cause pain, affect chewing and nutrition, interfere with speech development, and can spread infection to the developing permanent tooth underneath. Treating a milk tooth isn't about saving something temporary — it's about protecting everything permanent that comes after it.

Dental anxiety in children is one of our most important areas of focus — because fear formed in childhood often persists into adulthood. At Dental White, we use a Tell-Show-Do approach: we show your child every instrument before using it, explain everything in child-friendly language, and never rush or force. For highly anxious children, the first visit may involve no treatment at all — just an introduction. We go entirely at the child's pace, and many children who arrive frightened leave asking when they can come back.

Teeth grinding (bruxism) is quite common in children — most outgrow it as their jaw and bite develop. However, persistent grinding can wear down enamel and cause jaw pain or headaches. We assess whether the grinding is affecting your child's teeth and bite, and whether any intervention is needed. In most cases, we monitor, advise parents on signs to watch for, and only intervene if clear wear is occurring.

Age 7 is the internationally recommended time for a first orthodontic screening — when a mix of baby and permanent teeth are present and we can identify developing bite problems early. Many bite issues are significantly easier and cheaper to correct early than after all permanent teeth have come in. We include a basic orthodontic assessment as part of regular check-ups for children in this age range.

If it's a permanent tooth: pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse very gently with milk or clean water, try to place it back in the socket, and come to us immediately — within 30 minutes gives the best chance of saving it. If you can't replant it, keep it in milk or between the cheek and gum. If it's a milk tooth: do NOT try to replant it — reinserting a milk tooth can damage the permanent tooth developing beneath. Control the bleeding, keep the tooth, and call us for an emergency appointment. Speed matters — please call us the moment it happens.
